General climate aridization in the period of 50-60s in the region of the North-West Caspian Sea was largely due to a significant drop in the Caspian Sea level. It was after the drop in the Caspian Sea level that new vast arid territories appeared here and abrupt changes in the appearance of coastal landscapes towards their desertification occurred. The complex influence of climatic and anthropogenic factors led to significant changes in the primary natural biocenotic complexes and caused the disappearance of settlements of the little ground squirrel over vast areas.

Key words: Little ground squirrel, Caspian lowland, number of little ground squirrel, Primorye, Black lands, aridization.
