This publication deals with the problem of surface water pollution by various toxic substances, their origin from urban areas and industrial enterprises. Particular attention is paid to the influence of various factors, such as landscaping, population density and the presence of impermeable surfaces, on the formation of the amount of pollutants in rain and storm runoff. In order to effectively treat surface wastewater and reduce its impact on the environment and living organisms, special attention should be paid to the capture and removal of suspended and organic substances.

Key words: surface runoff, environmental pollution, water bodies, surface sewage (SWS), toxic substances, living organisms, landscaping, population density, impermeable surfaces, rain and storm runoff
