THE TAXONOMIC CATEGORY "PHYLUM"

In the nomenclature of prokaryotes, the highest taxonomic category is "class". But for three decades, microbiologists have been using the taxonomic category "phylum" (this category is higher than the class), although they still cannot agree on the formal recognition of this category and its inclusion in the international code of nomenclature for prokaryotes.
